About Me

I’m Jake McLaughlin, founder of The Next Play.

I grew up playing hockey in the Chicago area — in Hinsdale, Illinois — for AAA organizations like The Chicago Mission and Team Illinois.

After high school I joined the USHL, the top development league for players chasing Division I opportunities, and it was there that video analysis first changed the way I saw my own game.

During my two years with the Fargo Force, I was recruited by Greg Carvel, an 11-year NHL coach now at the University of Massachusetts.

Together we built UMass into the #1 team in the country, reaching the Frozen Four and the 2019 National Championship game.

I was named a Hockey East Third-Team All-Star, served as assistant captain, and finished the season in the top five nationally in plus/minus — while playing alongside Cale Makar, who went on to win the Norris Trophy and Stanley Cup.

UMass is also where video work truly became part of my process.

Coaches would sit with me, pause and rewind film frame by frame, and show me exactly what separated a good shift from a great one.

Seeing myself from that outside perspective sped up my development faster than any single practice or workout could.

I signed my first professional contract in 2021 with the Vegas Golden Knights organization, playing my first year with their AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights.

Since then I’ve played for the Milwaukee Admirals and the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

The Next Play exists because I know firsthand what a well-run video session can do for a young player’s confidence and hockey IQ.

I built my own training facility — my “Hockey Training HQ” — to produce the same quality of breakdown and coaching that changed my own career, and I bring it to players of every level who are serious about getting better.
